Sugarcane reached India around **1000 BC** and was quickly adopted, becoming a vital part of ancient Indian agriculture and cuisine. India is recognized as the world's original source for the cultivation and manufacture of sugar.
The cultivation was then introduced to the Mediterranean by Arab traders and finally reached the Americas in the 15th and 16th centuries. Today, it remains one of the world's most economically important crops.
**Uttar Pradesh** holds the undisputed title of the **'Sugarcane Bowl of India'**. The fertile Indo-Gangetic plains, coupled with ideal climatic conditions and irrigation infrastructure, make it the single largest producer of sugarcane in the country.
